Nigella Lawson Creates Cookbook For Cancer Patients

Nigella Lawson

Nigella Lawson, a noted British journalist and gourmet chef, has created a cookbook for people battling cancer, as reported by the London Evening Standard. The author of several books, including “How to Eat” and “How to Be a Domestic Goddess, ” is teaming up with high profile celebrities and food experts on how to feed those undergoing debilitating chemotherapy and radiation.

Mary Berry and Thomasina Miers have made their contributions in addition to  Mary McCartney, who lost her mother Linda, wife of rock great Paul McCartney, to cancer in 1998. Lawson’s first husband, journalist John Diamond, had his life claimed by cancer as well.

The recipes in the cookbook focus on highly nutritious foods as well as those that are relatively easy to eat for those who are losing their appetites to the onset of disease and punishing treatments. The Royal Marsden Cancer Cookbook will be available in February and has Clare Shaw, a cancer dietician, as an advisor to the project.

Miers is a masterchef winner who included her recipe of spiced lentils with rice, chicken livers and pomegranate. Lawson’s recipe is for cauliflower, tumeric and garlic soup. Lawson said, “This soup is soothing and bolstering as well as easy and satisfying to eat.”

While Dr. Shaw said there is no one diet that is ideal for cancer patients, the main concerns are appetite, the ability to taste, weight changes and a healthy diet that can be sustaining through and after treatment.

Nigella Lawson is the daughter of Nigel Lawson, who was the Chancellor of the Exchequer under British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Both of Nigella’s parents are Jewish, and following her parent’s divorce in 1980, her mother Vanessa married the prominent professor A..J Ayer. Nigella is host of the BBC 4 series Nigella bites and has her own line of cookware. In addition to losing her husband to cancer, Lawson’s mother died of liver cancer and her sister Thomasina died of breast cancer.
