The rules they are a’ changing, at least for the Emmys, according to gosangelo. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will assume comedies are 30 minutes long and dramas are 60 minutes long. But what about “Orange is the New Black, ” a comedy that is an hour long?
Not to worry. The rules can be relaxed on an individual basis, says Bruce Rosenblum, chairman of the television academy. The industry panel will then “take up the case, ” he said. The voting is about to become more democratic, as those who voted in the nominating round will be able to cast a vote for the actual winner, rather than relying only on a final “blue ribbon panel.” In addition, the comedy and drama categories can now have seven nominees rather than the old limit of six. Miniseries will have a new name–limited series and variety comedies will be divided into sketch and talk categories.
