Israel has always been at the forefront of aggrotech since the early days of the first Zionist settlements. The country may now be known more as Startup Nation for all of its success in the high tech world. But until recently it was best known for its agricultural innovations. The pioneers of early Israel famously drained swamps, planted orange groves (oranges are not indigenous to the Middle East) and irrigated deserts to grow all sorts of crops. Israel was so successful at this that the country early on sent experts to help third world nations in Africa develop their own agriculture. Nowadays Israelis have combined their country’s history of agricultural innovation with its high tech innovation.

Just a few examples of this include Redefine Meats, which uses 3D printing technology to produce meat alternatives. Established in 2018, Redefine Meat applies its proprietary 3D printing technology, meat digital modeling, and advanced food formulations to produce animal-free meat with the “appearance, texture and flavor of whole muscle meat.”
Then there is Israeli startup Ilsar Truffles which makes expensive black winter truffles. It does so using advanced biological technology.
Founded in 2012, Equinom is a computational breeding company which declares that it is revolutionizing the seed industry by introducing a new model of seed providers. The company states that they are creating a gene-bank where food developers can find ingredients that meet exact specification, provided these exist in nature.
“Envision all-natural ingredients that don’t require processing – by nature, the source seeds do the hard work for you. Visualize expediting production and speeding your products to consumer shelves. Vividly picture that consumers rave about your products’ appeal, high protein and nutritious clean labels.”

Using their technology Equinom creates multi-trait products, previously unachievable and revive complex multi-gene traits that were lost in years of breeding. Equinom boasts that their technology cuts time to market by half and offers breeding that is 10 times more precise than any other method.
To date Equinom offers the food industry pea and cowpea varieties with 50% more protein per sq. m, with chickpea, mung bean lentil and fava in different stages of development, as well as sesame varieties with 45% more oil per square meter that can be harvested mechanically.
Equinom founder and CEO Dr. Gil Shalev said, “With this capital vote of trust from investors, we now have the ability to unleash our products in the market and become a global leader in the agtech space. Leveraging our cutting-edge seed-to-plate food-application technology to create source ingredients, Equinom helps market-leading food brands turn regular food into super food. Similar to how consumers use Google, we anticipate they will use Equinom’s AI database to match their needs with non-GMO ingredients that have never been explored before. In Q4 we will be releasing our first batch of Smarter Pea Protein concentrate to the market which will be the highest pea protein concentrate available in the world.”
