Have you heard about “Raw Dogging?” Don’t worry, it’s nothing dirty or anything like that. Just imagine spending hours on a long plane ride and doing absolutely nothing, not even sleeping.
Raw dogging has recently emerged as a disturbing trend, particularly in the context of air travel. It refers to the act of enduring a long-haul flight without any form of entertainment, sustenance, or even sleep. Participants in this trend pride themselves on their ability to withstand the entire flight without any distractions.

That’s right. Nothing! No books or magazines. No playing cards or even listening to music. The people who engage in this practice – mostly men – will just sit in their seats quietly and pass the time doing nothing, even on really long lights.
However, this trend is extremely dangerous. Medical professionals warn that depriving oneself of basic necessities like water, food, and rest can lead to serious health consequences, including dehydration, exhaustion, and even death.
Michael Ceely, a therapist in California who specializes in working with men, told CNN about his experience engaging in raw dogging on a four hour flight. For Ceely, this is something positive. However, this is if the time is passed in some form of meditation.
“I was tired of the usual routine of watching a movie or reading a book (onboard) so I said, ‘I’m just going to kind of stare off into space, and use it is a Zen meditation.’” Ceely told CNN.
“Men do like challenges,” he added. “It’s definitely more socially acceptable for men to brag about something like this. Also I think it might be more of a male psyche kind of thing: I like a challenge, let me see if I can get through this. It’s an acetic practice, but branding it with bro-speak.”
However, raw dogging should not be seen as some sort of challenge, just another way to prove your manhood.
This is especially so when taking long flights and traveling between numerous time zones. The body needs rest and you need to get plenty of sleep when traveling to another time zone. And you should also drink plenty of fluids when flying.
So, if you are taking a flight of just two hours or so and going through multiple time zones, then maybe raw dogging is the way to go. However, if you have ever flown on a long-haul flight of ten hours or more, you know why this is not always such a good idea.
