The warnings about it come from none other than the flight attendants themselves. They say the main problem with the coffee is that it is made with the plane’s tap water which many feel is unclean. They also expressed concerns about the cleanliness of the coffee pots themselves.

One person posted in a TikTok video, “The fact that the tanks rarely get cleaned that the water is in should be the least of your concern. For me, it’s always been the way that flight attendants have to clean out coffee pots.”

Flight attendant Celina Bedding told the Mirror, “for any passengers out there, whether you are a frequent flyer, an occasional flyer, a seasonal flyer or will be a first-time flyer soon, I would like to say to you: Never drink tap water from the plane bathroom.”

“Many studies have shown it’s not sanitary for drinking,” she added. “You may have seen the sign already as most planes have it by the tap. You may have thought it’s just a way to get you to buy a drink. But it’s actually for your own health. So definitely do not drink tap water on a plane.”

Some of the cons when it comes to drinking airplane coffee include the fact that it is often made with instant coffee, which can be perceived as inferior to freshly brewed coffee. Additionally, the low cabin pressure can affect the taste and aroma. Also, individual preferences play a major role, where some passengers find airplane coffee weak and bitter, while others find it perfectly acceptable for a quick pick-me-up.

In some good news, the water used for coffee on airplanes is regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and must meet strict safety standards. It undergoes regular testing for contamination, ensuring its potability.

But some say that airplane water tanks undergo infrequent cleaning, leading to bacterial growth. While cleaning frequency varies between airlines, they have procedures in place to maintain tank hygiene.

The problem for flyers is that people are no longer allowed to bring drinks aboard planes, even ones purchased after the security check. So you need to finish your coffee before boarding the plane.

So, if you need a coffee alternative after waking up from an inflight nap you might want to try a caffeinated beverage instead of the airplane coffee.
