Soon the fire will no longer burn, in New York anyway, Billy Joel is ending his Madison Square Garden residency. The “Paino Man” himself will be “movin’ out” of the arena in July 2024 after a record-breaking ten year stint.
People talk about Las Vegas residencies all of the time. So many of the world’s most famous performers get set up with a permanent gig at a famous Las Vegas casino, usually late in their careers. But for Billy Joel there could be no other place than New York for his residency.

Billy Joel is practically synonymous with New York. He has always been in a “New York State of Mind,” and it could be said the most New Yorkers are always in a Billy Joel state of mind.
Even New York City Mayor Eric Adams was saddened by the new, saying at a press conference, “There’s only one thing that’s more New York than Billy Joel — and that’s a Billy Joel concert at MSG, “For more than 50 years, Billy’s music has defined our city and brought us together. On behalf of 8.5 million New Yorkers, congratulations, Billy, on a historic run of sold-out shows at MSG, and thank you for a lifetime of bringing joy to us all.”
“Billy Joel’s franchise run has made history – not only for Madison Square Garden, but also for the music industry overall,” said MSG CEO James Dolan. “150 sold-out lifetime shows is a remarkable achievement, and speaks to Billy’s extraordinary talent, beloved catalog, and dedicated fan base. Billy always has a home here at MSG even though the residency is coming to an end with his 150th-lifetime performance,” Dolan continued.”
As for Billy Joel himself, he cried his eyes out at the press conference.
Billy Joel was born William Martin Joel in the Bronx, New Yok, to Jewish parents. His father was born in Germany in 1923 and his father’s family was able to flee the country before it was too late. Joel grew up in the Long Island suburban town of Oyster Bay, on the north shore of the Island.
