Billy Joel Selling Long Island Estate for $49 Million

Billy Joel

Billy Joel Estate (from the listing by Tyler Sands/Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty)

Billy Joel, the Piano Man himself, is Movin’ Out! That is, he is leaving his native homeland – New York State – for Florida. The legendary musician, now 74, has put his beachfront Long Island estate on the market for $49 million.

So, Billy Joel is not only one of the greatest musicians of all time, he is also quite original. Who ever heard of an older Jew from New York moving down to Florida to enjoy his golden years?

And where does someone like Billy Joel live? Well, in Centre Island, NY, in a big mansion with lots of land right on the beach, of course.

The listing of the property at Sotheby’s International Realty boasts that this is, “an EXTRAORDINARY one-of-a-kind Waterfront estate on over 26 acres with 2000+ft of waterfront on Oyster Bay Harbor. The Estate includes a 20,000+ square foot Estate house currently under renovation plus a 3 bedroom Beach House, inground pool, helicopter pad, floating dock and boat ramp on Oyster Bay Harbor, a 3 bedroom guest apartment, a bowling alley and indoor pool, a maintenance house and a 4 bedroom Gate/Guest House with an attached 3 bedroom apartment. The Main House offers 180 degrees of spectacular elevated waterviews. Description of number of bedrooms and baths and kitchens is only pertaining to Main House.”

If you are thinking about taking this deal, remember if you have the $49 million to cough up you will also need to shell out more than $45,000 in property taxes.

Newsday reported that Billy Joel’s real estate agent said that the Centre Island estate was purchased by the musician back in 2002 for $22.5 million. So, that would mean more than a %100 return on investment for Joel after 21 years of ownership. But he probably had to spend at least that much over the years on the estate’s maintenance, taxes and insurance.

Billy Joel was born William Martin Joel in the Bronx, New Yok, to Jewish parents. His father was born in Germany in 1923 and his father’s family was able to flee the country before it was too late. Joel grew up in the Long Island suburban town of Oyster Bay, on the north shore of the Island.
