The closeness, the all-encompassing relationship, the unconditional love I experienced in my relationship with my Bubby and Zeidy gave them more power over my life than the typical grandchild and I, in return, knew I owed them far more than the typical grandchild might. Take all of this and combine it with the superstar status that had been bestowed upon me as the first randchild and the only family member born in America, and the one that had all the goods and the tools to take the family forward and do everyone—including all the dead relatives, I suppose—proud. It was a lot for any kid to manage.
At the same time I was growing up, Bubby’s star was rising.
Meanwhile, Mom’s wasn’t.
It was confusing. On one hand, I was supposed to feel lucky, blessed and grateful even to be here. On the other hand, there was always, for me, a lot of angst, confusion and questions.
