Petitoners Urge Starbucks to Stop Sleeping with Monsanto

Monsanto Starbucks

Petitioners are putting pressure on Starbucks to stop supporting Monsanto in its lawsuit against the State of Vermont for GMO labeling laws, according to Hospitality magazine. Vermont became the first state to pass a law requiring food containing GMOs to be labelled, But Monsanto and Starbucks says doing so restricts the free speech of companies (can companies talk?)

Starbucks is part of the Growers Manufacturing Association and is therefore, dragged into bed with Monsanto, but petitoners, under the auspices of SumOfUS think Starbuck’s record on LGBT and labor issues, including providing an online college education for its employees, makes it surprising that it would support a company like Monsanto.

The SumOfUs petition reads, “Monsanto might not care what we think, but as a public facing company, Starbucks does. If we can generate enough attention, we can pressure Starbucks to withdraw its support for the lawsuit and then pressure other companies to do the same.”

Dow, Coca-Cola and General Mills also support Monsanto in the lawsuit. SumOfUs has already raised half a million dollars for the State of Vermont’s legal fund.
