Facebook is catching up and will soon surpass YouTube — which is owned by Google — in its total number of video viewers. This according to a report from Ampere Analysis. By the end of the year, Facebook will have two trillion views to YouTube’s three trillion.
And that is not all. Facebook already makes more money from its viewers. YouTube only brings in $0.28 per monthly average user where Facebook makes $0.73. And Facebook has more users too.

“The scale of the two players is such that there is likely to be no speedy victory for one side or the other – years of competition are on the horizon, ” said Richard Broughton, research director for Ampere, in a statement.
“From a consumer perspective, exposure to increased volumes of advertising is almost a certainty, but improved returns for their favorite channels will mean more content to watch.”
Meanwhile, about 75% of Facebook’s ad revenue is now coming from people who log on through mobile devices. This is a surprise to no one.
So of course the company is looking for ways to improve its advertising through mobile devices. An early version of its soon to be released new ad format features full-screen video and product information in addition to other content.
The new format will debut at the Cannes Lions advertising festival in France on Tuesday.
Facebook’s chief product officer, Chris Cox, told The Wall Street Journal, “You’re starting to see a lot of new interactions [on mobile] We’re trying to spend a moment looking at some of these trends and imagining what they’ll look like in next few years.”
“We’re trying to become an industry leader to delivering great experience with limited network [capabilities] and devices, ” he added.
