Jon Bernthal has joined the cast of the Netflix original series “Daredevil” ahead of its second season. The actor, best known for playing Shane on the first two seasons of “The Walking Dead, ” will play The Punisher.
Marvel Studios has been blowing away audiences with its movies since Disney bought the rights to the Marvel comic book universe. It also succeeded on television with this year’s original series produced for Netflix, Daredevil.

The Punisher — whose real name is Frank Castle — is a martial arts expert and a veteran who tries to clean up the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood in Manhattan as a vigilante. But is he a good guy or a bad guy? How will he interact with the show’s real hero, the blind lawyer with special powers that make him the vigilante Daredevil.
“Jon Bernthal brings an unmatched intensity to every role he takes on, with a potent blend of power, motivation and vulnerability that will connect with audiences, ” Marvel head of TV Jeph Loeb said. “Castle’s appearance will bring dramatic changes to the world of Matt Murdock and nothing will be the same.”
Returning for season two of the show, due out mid 2016, are Charlie Cox as the Daredevil, Vincent D’Onofrio as bad guy Wilson Fisk and Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page.
Since The Punisher is a comic book hero in his own right around whom three feature films have already been made, perhaps this is an attempt to set up a spin off staring Bernthal in the title role.
