If you are worried about loved ones who were in Nepal at the time of yesterday’s earthquake then you can use Facebook’s new Safety Check app to find out if they are O.K.

“Safety Check” was launched in 2014. Mark Zuckerberg came up with the idea for the app after the devastating earthquake in Japan back in 2011.

It is simple to use. If you find yourself in the area of a natural disaster, such as Nepal, and you are O.K. then all you have to do is click on the “I’m Safe” button and all of your family and friends will know that you are all right.

Zuckerberg tweeted yesterday, “This morning we activated Safety Check for people affected by the earthquake in Nepal. It’s a simple way to let family and friends know you’re okay.

“If you’re in one of the areas affected by the earthquake, you’ll get a notification asking if you’re safe, and whether you want to check on any of your friends.

“When disasters happen, people need to know their loved ones are safe. It’s moments like this that being able to connect really matters. My thoughts are with everyone who’s been caught up in this tragedy.”

The post already has more than 33, 000 likes. User Anil Keshary Shah Nepali replied to it:

“Thank you Mark & the facebook family we need all the help we can get and we need it as fast as possible! Most of Kathmandu including me and my family are sleeping under the night sky tonight and the earth still shakes ever so often under our feet filling fear in our hearts all over again!

“It’s close to midnight and we just heard the Indian Air Force jets flying into the valley, the first helping hands hopefully…”
