The 52 year old comedian, who has hosted the program since 1999, made the announcement on last night’s show in a simple statement at the beginning.
In what may have been an attempt at humor, Stewart delared that for his final program, “I will be wearing a suit. I will more than likely be showered.” He wears a suit on every show and we hope that he at least showers occasionally.
As if they had hoped that Stewart would choose to wear some sort of zany costume for his swan song, the studio audience seemed disappointed with this. A quick thinking Stewart then changed tone and said, “I’m sorry, I will be wearing overalls and I won’t shower. So I hope that you will join us for that program.”
There is no word yet as to what Stewart is planning for his own goodbye party. One thing is certain, though. He will have a very hard time topping what his former Comedy Central colleague and host of the “Colbert Report” did in his final broadcast. Stephen Colbert stepped down from the 11:30 time slot on the network a few months ago to prepare for his new job as David Letterman’s successor.
Stewart’s final show is sure to be bitter sweet. Bitter for the half of all Americans who love him, and sweet for the half who think that he is a self-important know it all.
