The first still photograph from Woody Allen’s next film “Irrational Man” has been released. It features the movie’s two stars Emma Stone and Joaquin Phoenix.
Not much can be gleaned from the photo. It just shows the two actors siting and chatting at the entrance to a building as Stone smiles brightly.

The movie is set to feature a romance between an older philosophy professor (Phoenix) at a small town college and his much younger student (Stone). The professor is suffering through some sort of life crisis and his young student helps him to somehow get through it.
Sound familiar? It should! An older man dating a younger woman has been a theme in many a Woody Allen movie like “Manhattan.” In fact, 1992’s “Husbands and Wives” had basically the same exact story only in that movie Allen played a married professor at Barnard College in New York who has an affair with one of his students played by Juliette Lewis.
Not only that, Mariel Hemingway has just written about how Allen made an awkward attempt at hitting on her when she was filming his movie Manhattan. Allen, who was more than 20 years older than the barely 18 Hemingway, asked the young actress to join him on a trip to Paris.
At least now Allen has finally acknowledged that he is too old to play the older man having a fling with the younger woman. Or maybe since he has now been married to a woman more than 30 years his junior for twenty years the Oscar winning writer/director no longer feels a need to play out his personal fantasies on film himself.
Previously, Allen turned the older man with a younger woman role over to such actors as Colin Firth, Kenneth Branagh, Anthony Hopkins and even Larry David.
But at least he still offers his audiences a young muse in a starring role. Back in 1979 it was Mariel Hemingway in Manhattan. Later there were Mia Sorvino and Winona Rider. Then Scarlett Johansson, who appeared in three of Allen’s movies.
This time Emma Stone, 26, is filling that role in her second Woody Allen movie.
Due out July 24, “Irrational Man” also stars Parker Posey and Ethan Phillips. It is the 50th movie that Allen has directed.
