According to Waze, “The AMBER alert program is a voluntary partnership between law-enforcement agencies, broadcasters, transportation agencies and the wireless industry that aims to galvanize communities in the search for and the safe recovery of missing children.”

Wazw will scan for the AMBER alerts every 10 minutes, and will display them to user after their vehicles has stopped for more than 10 seconds.

The idea is to avoid running the text alerts while the car is in motion, which could lead to texting.

Each individual alert will only appear once a week, so as not to annoy the user.

The unique Waze mapping and direction app uses crowdsourced data from the its community. The assumption is that the same Waze community that loves reporting speed traps and accidents to fellow drivers on the highway, will be just as good spotting a missing cxhild, should he or she appear near their passing car.

Waze users might also report suspicious objects related to the disappearances.
