Security cameras show an empty vault, but investigators are not yet certain exactly how much was stolen, since they are yet to gain full access.

“Yesterday we could only open one of the treasury’s doors. We hope to open the next one today, ” the central bank director for Afghanistan’s southwestern region, Fazel Ahmad Azimi, told Reuters.

Officials believe the Kandahar raid was the work of a senior manager at the bank, who has been working there for 9 years. He was helped by his son and his brother-in-law, both also bank employees, Azimi said.

Investigators believed the robbers fled to Pakistan.

According to Azimi, investigators are waiting for the CCTV recordings to be recovered from the memory chip of the security cameras, since the robbers removed the actual recordings.

It helps when you’re familiar the place you’re robbing.
