At issue was not whether Strauss-Kahn engaged in a plethora of sex parties and orgies in cities worldwide, but if he had organized the parties or knew that some of the participants were prostitutes. According to Fevre, there is no evidence that Strauss Kahn is guilty of pimping.

It should be noted that prostitution is legal in France, but not procuring prostitutes. Apparently, he thought it was just amateur hour, in which case, it would have been perfectly legal.

Fevre told CNN, “Was (Strauss-Kahn) an organizer of these evenings? The answer is no. He did not give instructions. Has he benefited financially from prostitution? The answer is no. Has he paid prostitutes? The answer is no.”

The prostitution ring is said to be based in hotels in Lille France, which is one reason why the scandal is referred to as “The Carlton Affair.” The BBC reports that the trial is part of a trend to look more deeply into the private lives of high-profile people in France, with the public feeling that they should no longer be exempt from scrutiny.

In 2011, Strauss-Kahn, who was thought to have been a possible challenger to then French President Nicolas Sarokozy, had to step down as head of the IMF after allegations of rape from a hotel maid. the charges were dropped after a settlement, according to the BBC.
