Rasmea Odeh

Motions by the defense team of Rasmea Odeh, a 68 year old Palestinian activist who was convicted of Unlawful Procurement of Naturalization, have been rejected by a judge, as reported by the Nation. The motions called for a new trial because of errors in rulings and another to cancel the jury’s decisions in a previous trial. The defense’s motions were critical of how Judge Gershwin Drain conducted the trial, and the same just rejected the motions. Odeh could be facing up to ten years in prison, and lawyers are asking the judge to take her age into consideration.

Rasmea Odeh claims that she was raped and tortured by the Israelis into confessing to an bombing in Jerusalem. She was arrested by Homeland Security when she was living in America for failing to disclose her prior conviction which she said was secured through torture.

Odeh was convicted in 1970 by a military court for bombings that killed two people. The newest conviction in the US was for immigration fraud. Odeh has been active in supporting the boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel movement and was instrumental in influencing workers at the University of California to refuse to take part in any research, conferences, events or other activities sponsored by Israeli universities.
