Marc Benioff, CEO of cloud computing pioneer Salesforce.com, was given the Tech Crunchie Award for CEO of the year for 2014.
It was certainly an eventful year for Salesforce and Benioff, as the company returned 29% to give it a $36 billion market cap, according to Tech Crunch. While there were many fresh faces in the software as a service space, Salesforce retained its market share and wasn’t threatened by the plethora of new cloud IPOs. Benioff explains Salesforce’s success is due in large part to hiring the right team. In his book, “Behind the Cloud, ” Benioff wrote, “We take hiring as seriously as we do revenue. Some people say I am obsessed with hiring, and they’re right”, Business Insider said. Nancy Connery, head of Salesforce’s Human Resources says qualities it takes to be on the Salesforce team are intelligence, communication skills and integrity. If there seems to be a poor fit, Connery says she isn’t afraid to “fire fast.”

Marc Benioff is giving a lot back to Salesforce’s home city, San Francisco, with a $100 million donation to the UCSF Medical Center, the largest single donation to the center. Salesforce also has a lease in a building and will have offices in several floors. The tower will be named, appropriately enough the Salesforce Tower.
