After its Sundance screening Segel said that to prepare for the role he, “read, and I read and I read. I started a book club in the little town that I live in outside of L.A. with three really great book dorks who had read Infinite Jest like five or six times. And we talked through it. I say book dorks with such love, you know? And we just talked a lot. I think one of the things with David Foster Wallace, what’s so special about his writing is he touches on some very universal human feelings. So I tried to really pay attention to the parts of us that are the same.”
Segel told Rolling Stone magazine, “Specifically, what [The End of the Tour] is about is the last four days of the Infinite Jest book tour. David Lipsky, for Rolling Stone, decided he wanted to do a profile on this man, David Foster Wallace, who had just written a book, Infinite Jest that was called ‘the book of a generation. The interviews ended up not getting published, but [Lipsky] published the book after Wallace passed away.”
The Guardian says, “the film is quite touching and, at times, wise. It goes to great lengths not to make Wallace wacky. Ponsoldt has a knack of having his scenes land where you expect them to, but taking a circuitous route. When Wallace and Lipsky meet it’s like a nervous blind date. Later they become bros, joking about women on the road and chomping down junk food. They’ll never see eye-to-eye as writers (as Wallace had few equals) but they ultimately bond as men with ambition. To that end, The End of the Tour is a cautionary tale.”
As for his love life, Segel is now dating photographer Alexis Mixter, who is the sister of The Real L World actress Whitney Mixter. The couple was recently pictured coming out of a supermarket together holding their takeout lunches.
