The female doctor who conducted the medical examination of a female executive allegedly raped by Shiv Kumar Yadav, an Uber taxi company driver, told a court in New Delhi Wednesday that after looking at the marks on the woman’s body, she concluded that she had been raped, the New Delhi Business Standard reported.
Dr. Neelam, who practices at the New Delhi Hindu Rao Hospital, told Judge Kaveri Baweja that she had found various scratch marks on the woman’s body and a swelling on her lips. All the injuries were fresh.
In response to a question from the defense regarding those scratch marks, she said: “Considering the observation made by me … I can say that that the victim was raped.”
Dr. Neelam was testifying for the prosecution.
The court is scheduled to hear four more prosecution witnesses on Thursday: an expert from the Forensic Science Laboratory, another doctor and two police officials.
The court dismissed a plea by the accused driver, saying he was being threatened and attacked in the prison van by fellow inmates.
The court directed police to ensure the defendant’s security and provide him with a separate enclosure inside the prison van.
Yadav, 32, is accusaed of raping the female executive in his cab which she had hired to go home in north Delhi’s Inderlok area on Dec 5 last year. The charges against him include rape, grievous bodily harm, endangering the life of a woman, kidnapping a woman, criminal intimidation and voluntarily causing pain, all under different sections of the Indian Penal Code.
