Prince Andrew Bringing Giant Elephant to Davos Summit

Prince Andrew

Even a torrid sex scandal apparently can’t keep Prince Andrew away from hosting his annual drinks reception at the four day Economic Summit in Davos, Switzerland, but politicians back home think he should sit it out this year lest he distract attendees and cause them to think about royal knickers and the Prince’s alleged toe sucking rather than British business.

The four day conference will be the Prince’s first public appearance since Virginia Roberts alleged that convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein forced her to have sex with the Duke of York between 1999 and 2002. Buckingham palace has stringently denied the accusations, and that is exactly what Prince Andrew is expected to do at the conference (but keep him away from the girls). While his Pitch@Palace reception to support young people developing digital ventures is usually closed to media, it is expected that the media might be allowed to cover a speech Prince Andrew will give, according to the Independent. A source told the Daily Mail that Prince Andrew needs to address the questions personally so people can move on. His absence, in other words, would speak volumes, and it is better that he speaks for himself.

However, Liberal Democrat MPs Sir Menzies Campbell and Norman Baker think the Prince should stay away from Davos. Baker said the scrutiny faced by the Prince “might be unfair, ” but added, “But I think when we represent our country abroad, whoever we are, we have to bear in mind how we will be received at any particular point.” Sir Campbell discussed the need for “discretion rather than distraction.” Three Labour members of the House of Commons also expressed concern that Prince Andrew’s presence at Davos would be distracting.

Who knows? Maybe no one really noticed him before.
