Isn’t Justin Bieber too young to be working with Rick Rubin on a comeback? Or perhaps in Bieber years, he feels as long in the tooth as the late Johnny Cash was when the master producer revamped Cash’s career late in life, and it is worth mentioning the spare, stoic makeover Rubin gave Neil Diamond a few albums ago.
Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun posted Bieber posing for a selfie with Rick Rubin, which of course has led to rumors that they will work together. Braun wrote the elusive caption to his Instagram photo, “Working on some history.” Bieber has a history of misbehavior and bad publicity moves recently, so perhaps Braun is referring to that. In addition, his various arrests and much mocked Calvin Klein ads might merit a serious change in direction. Or perhaps he is referencing Rubin’s history of creating and remaking careers with the adroitness of a magician.

The list of entertainers Rubin has worked with is dizzying. He was co-President of Columbia records, founder of Def Jam records and his work with the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Public Enemy and Run DMC helped popularize hip hop. In 2007, MTV said Rubin was the most important producer in the last 20 years, and Time magazine listed him as one of the 100 most important people in the world.
