Emmy Rossum Talks Shameless Return (Watch Season 5 Clip)

The fifth season of Shameless, which stars daughter of a single Jewish mother Emmy Rossum as the oldest sister of a dysfunctional family in Chicago, premiered last night on Showtime. Fans finally got the answer to the question that they have been asking since Justin Chatwin’s return in last year’s finale but of course we will avoid any spoilers for those of you who may have Tivo’d the show.

Rossum did, however, give fans a heads up about it before the show’s premiere saying, “The Jimmy/Steve character will be back. I was really happy about that because I had really campaigned hard to bring him back. I didn’t feel like we had closed up that storyline well. So I’m very excited that he’s back. He’s back!”

The actress also told The Hollywood Reporter, “Most of my favorite shows exist in this place between drama and comedy. There have been days when you could laugh hysterically and cry in the same day — where you can experience everything. So for me, it’s more true to life in that way.”

Rossum said that we she likes most about the character Fiona is, “her desire to win, and that’s kind of throughout all of the characters, even if you think about Frank. He’s so persistent about destroying his body and drinking; he just doesn’t give up. These are characters that do not give up. Even Mickey, deciding to come out in front of his family at this thuggy, dirty Irish bar. There’s just a refusal to quit, and that’s something I respect in all the characters and something I continue to enjoy to play. No matter how many times they get beat up, lose their house, get separated, go into foster care — they still come together; they don’t really get bogged down the way life can bog you down. They’re fighters.”

The 28-year-old actress also recently co-hosted the Independent Spirit Awards. Attendees probably ignored the results as they would have been too busy staring at Rossum as she stunned in a patterned green, black, and white dress.
