Comedian turned political commentator Bill Maher got some good news before his weekly show’s return tonight, after taking a break for the holidays. HBO has renewed Real Time for another two seasons.
Ahead of his show’s 13th season premiere Maher appeared on fellow talk show host Jimmy Kimmel’s program where he had quite a few things to say about the terrorist attacks in Paris this week and religion in general. As always, he was provocative and offensive.

Referring to the attack Maher said, “We have to not avoid who did this. Who did this, Jimmy?”
Kimmel foolishly tried to answer saying, “Well, we presume, ” when Maher cut him off.”No, it’s not a presume! No, its Muslim terrorists, ” he said.
The son of a Jewish woman and a professed atheist who derides all religions has been very vocal in his contempt for Islam in particular. Maher has been pointing out for years that the world is only threatened by Muslim terrorists and that no one needs to fear being murdered just for mocking Judaism and Christianity.
“This happens way too frequently, ” Maher told Kimmel. “It’s like ‘Groundhog Day, ‘ except if the groundhog kept getting his head cut off.
“I know most Muslim people would not have carried out an attack like this. But here’s the important point. Hundreds of millions of them support an attack like this. They applaud an attack like this. What they say is, ‘We don’t approve of violence, but you know what? When you make fun of the Prophet, all bets are off, ” said Maher.
“That is mainstream in the Muslim world. When you make fun of the Prophet, all bets are off. You get what’s coming to you. It’s also mainstream that if you leave the religion, you get what’s coming to you, which is death. Not in every Muslim country, but this is the problem in the world that we have to stand up to.”
For good measure Maher added, “In 10 Muslim countries, you can get the death penalty just for being gay. They chop heads off in the square in Mecca. Well, Mecca is their Vatican City. If they were chopping heads off gay people in Vatican City, wouldn’t there be a bigger outcry among liberals?”
To be fair he did state that he thinks that all religions are bogus.
Maher’s show returns tonight at 10 PM Eastern time on HBO.
