Former President and vociferous critic of Israel, Jimmy Carter will be presenting the Person of the Year Award to Bob Dylan (a.k.a. Bob Zimmerman) at the MusiCares event in Los Angeles next month, as reported by Townhall.com. The pre-grammy event will take place on February 6, and performers billed include Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson and Jack White, with additional performances by Jackson Browne, Alanis Morissette, Neil Young, beck, Norah Jones, Black Keys, Stills & Nash and John Mellencamp.
The choice to have Jimmy Carter give the award to Bob Dylan is odd, and not because Jimmy Carter is a non-musician (as far as we know) and not that Bob Dylan doesn’t deserve it. The irony is that Carter has accused Israel of being an “apartheid” state and has been one of the harshest detractors of the Jewish State, and Bob Dylan is not just someone who “happens” to be Jewish, but has, at many points, defended Israel against lopsided criticism. His song “Neighborhood Bully, “ deals with a character who is savaged, but at the same time, accused of being a bully for defending himself, and is meant to be an allegory for the State of Israel. It would be interesting to hear what the two talk about before and after the presentation of the award. I bet they are not going to be talking about the Middle East.
