Arthur and Shirley Sotloff, parents of the U.S. journalist murdered by ISIS terrorist, are going to light the first candle for Miami’s public menorah, as reported by Chabad.org. The 31 year old was a freelance journalist who was kidnapped by terrorists in Aleppo, Syria and was eventually beheaded by ISIS in Iraq.
Chabad rabbi Yossi Harlig reached out to the parents while they were sitting shiva and invited them to light the first menorah in a public ceremony. Arthur Sotloff told Chabad.org, “Steve was always a proud Jew who always enjoyed the holidays … he worked to keep traditions in dark places, and we felt that really symbolizes the eight day holiday of Hanukkah which celebrates freedom and light.”

Europeans who were held along with Sotloff said he would pray towards Jerusalem and would fast on Yom Kippur, telling his captors that he was ill. Sotloff’s maternal grandparents were Holocaust survivors. Arthur Sotloff said, “Steve was always very focused on revealing persecution wherever it occurred. His grandparents taught him about the price of remaining silent.”
