The nominees for the 2015 Golden Globe Awards have been announced and, as expected, a number of Jews have been nominated. But, believe it or not, the vast majority of them were not Jews.
No, Jews do not “own” Hollywood if the Golden Globe nominations this year are any indicator. Only 4 Jewish actors out of sixty (6.7%) total nominees across twelve different categories got nods. And no Jews were nominated for writing or directing in the many different categories.

This fact might not be so lamented in the Jewish entertainment world since the Golden Globes are not taken that seriously. They are not chosen by the entertainers’ peers as is the case with the Oscars and Emmys, but by the Hollywood foreign press corps. Also, there are a myriad of categories with different ones for comedy and drama.
The four Jewish nominees were:
Joaquin Phoenix – his mother was Jewish – for Inherent Vice in the category Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical. The film, based on the Thomas Pynchon novel of the same name, due out this month, has gotten week reviews and is not really a comedy
Liev Schreiber, for the Showtime series Ray Donovan, in the category Best Performance by an Actor in a TV Series, Drama. In it Schreiber plays a Hollywood fix it man.
Jeffrey Tambor, for the Amazon original series Transparent, in the category Best Performance by an Actor in TV Series, Comedy. In Transparent Tambor plays a middle aged man who comes out as a trans-gender.
Patricia Arquette – her mother was Jewish – for the movie Boyhood in the category Best Performance by a Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.
Honorable mentions:
Christoph Waltz for Big Eyes in the category Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical. While not a Jew, his children are and he has a son who lives in Israel and is studying to become a rabbi.
