Belgian police have launched an investigation into the incident. According to police spokesperson Sven Lommaert, the suspect might be ”a 20-year-old man of East European origin.”

The Forum of Jewish organizations in Antwerp said the attack had to have been anti-Semitic. The group called on the authorities to take all necessary steps to protect Jewish institutions and people.

A man who had initially been arrested on suspicion of carrying out the attack was later released from police custody after investigators determined he was not involved in the stabbing.

According to EJP, some 18, 000 Jews live in Antwerp.
