Greg Austin of New Europe pointed out that more people have died in the ongoing conflict between Russia and the Ukraine that were killed in the Hungarian Uprising of 1956 that was crushed by the Soviets.

Austin thinks the European Union has failed the Ukraine and agrees with Soros that economic sanctions may not be enough to end the crisis. With the EU as a civilian power and the Ukraine not a member of NATO, it isn’t clear what Europe should to to rescue the Ukraine. Austin suggested Jens Stoltenberg, the new Secretary General of NATO and Donald Tusk, incoming President of the European Union craft a common strategy for Russia. Until then, it is enough simply to tell Europe to wake up to the severity of the crisis.
