Linda McCartney died of breast cancer in 1998. Her photograph of Eric Clapton in 1968 marked the first time in the publication’s history work by a female photographer was featured on the cover. Her pictures captured the more casual side of rock stars, with shots of Mick Jagger chatting away and Jimi Hendrix yawning. Through photographs, she told the story of her family, with warm, candid moments, including the famous photo of Paul “wearing” his baby daughter in his jacket. Linda McCartney joined her husband Paul to sing with the group Wings and was known for her activism on behalf of animal welfare and vegetarianism. Her line of ready-to-eat vegetarian meals is still the most popular vegetarian product in Britain.
Linda McCartney, born Linda Eastman, was raised in a Jewish family in Scarsdale, New York. Her father’s real name was Vail Epstein, but he changed it to Lee Eastman. There were rumors that she was related to George Eastman of Eastman Kodak, appropriate, given her career in photography, but of course, the rumor is false.
One of her daughters, Mary, is a photographer and another, Stella, is a fashion designer. Stella said in an interview, “Every image is a reflection of her way of seeing life and how she viewed every day with fresh eyes. Her lens was her way of expressing herself, the real Linda.”
