Syria Launches Hebrew Language News Website

SANA in Hebrew

The Syrian government has unveiled a new Hebrew language website. Yes you heard correctly.

The website was launched on Sunday along with one if Farsi, the language of Iran. Apparently the Syrian government wants to get its side of the story about that country’s three year old civil war to as many people as possible, including Israelis.

In a statement announcing the website’s launch, Ahmad Dawa of Syria’s official news service the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) said, “We want to address all those who speak this language. Our objective is to reach the largest number of people possible and to clarify Syria’s image.”

It is necessary, ” he added, “to address the Israeli entity, which occupies Arab territories, including the Syrian Golan, since decades, in its own language, which can far better serve the Resistance and its project against the occupation.”

It is doubtful that very many Hebrew speakers around the world will actually take advantage of this new service. Except for a laugh that is.

The website is riddled with both spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. It reads like it was written by a new immigrant to Israel who only just learned the language.

Its political bias is also glaring. Israel recently allowed Syrian civilians wounded in the fighting there to enter the country to receive medical treatment. For some reason SANA refers to these people as terrorists.

Whether due to technical problems on the Syrian side or outside attempts to interfere with the new site, it is hard to even load its various pages. They are frequently down.
