Michael Bloomberg has been made an honorary knight. But what makes this knight different from all other knights? Since he is an American and not a British citizen, he doesn’t get the title “Sir, ” (or at least not officially. I am sure there are people who call him “sir”). Bloomberg may use the initials KBE after his name, though.
The founder of Bloomberg and former Mayor of New York City was made, by Queen Elizabeth II, “an Honorary Knight of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire” in recognition for his “prodigious entrepreneurial and philanthropic endeavors” and his efforts to foster trans-Atlantic cooperation, as reported by newsobserver.com. Other Americans who have been given this honor, have been Steven Spielberg, Bill Gates and Angelina Jolie.
