Scarlett Johansson might have gotten sacked by Oxfam for doing commercials for Sodastream, whose headquarters are in the hotly contested West Bank, but she is raking it in with her newest film “Lucy” about a young woman who develops super brain powers. The Morgan Freeman film has grossed $253 million overseas and $378 million worldwide. The largest market for the film is in director and screenwriter Luc Besson’s native France, where sales were around $39 million, just $1 million shy of the budget for making the film.
Luc Besson also directed “La Femme Nikita” and The “Fifth Element.” Lucy, categorized as a sci-fi thriller, has earned a 66% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It is an underdog story about a woman who gets revenge against her captors by transcending the limitations of the mind to become a woman warrior.
