This morning, the IDF shot down a Syrian Sukhoi 24 combat aircraft in the skies over the Golan Heights. A Patriot missile was fired at the plane from a battery permanently stationed in the Upper Galilee. Syria has acknowledged that one of its aircraft “in the area of Quneitra” had been hit and brought down.
An IDF spokesperson said that “a combat aircraft that penetrated Israeli air space was successfully intercepted by Israel’s air defense system on the Syrian border.”

Last month, over the Syrian border, the IDF shot down a UAV launched towards Israel. The Quneitra region, just across the border from the Golan Heights, has been the scene of heavy fighting recently between Syrian rebels and troops loyal to the country’s President Assad.
