Ben Horowitz, a venture capitalist, has is own official rapper, an underground hip-hop artist named Divine from Brooklyn. Horowitz won Divine over when he posted an article, “How Hip-Hop became the inspiration for all of my thinking about leadership.” Horowitz, who has invested in Rap Genius, was sought out by Divine who recalled his first thoughts after seeing the comments of the venture capitalist. “My first reaction to that was a white dude…an older white gentleman from Silicon Valley, naw mean, loves hip-hop? To me that just didn’t sound right.”
But what did sound right was the music Horowitz asked Divine to create for his venture capital firm’s podcast. He called Divine his “official rapper, ” and even “the modern Jean Valjean, ” (the character from Les Miserables who was put in prison for stealing a loaf of bread). Divine says he’s inspired by the charities run by Ben Horowitz and his wife, and the two can be spotted wearing VC Life t-shirts.
