Online PR News – 20-August-2014 – Ozgene, a leading provider of genetically modified mice for medical research, has developed a new technology called goGermline. This technology produces genetically modified mice faster, more efficiently and with significantly fewer animals. As such, goGermline has a major positive impact on animal welfare within knockout and knock-in mouse model production. This new technology is part of Ozgenes overall mission to advance humanity – inspire curiosity.

Traditionally, genetic modification is done in mouse embryonic stem cells (ESC) from which a chimeric mouse is created. When mated, a percentage of the chimeric offspring are from the modified ESC that carry the genetic modification. However, this also inevitably produces mice that are not ESC derived and therefore unnecessary.

goGermline technology addresses this issue by generating only the ESC offspring, with significantly less unnecessary mice being produced. goGermline has a number of benefits. From an animal welfare point of view it improves the three Rs (Replace, Reduce, Refine). From a researchers point of view it improves production timelines and efficiencies in making knockout and knock-in mouse models.
