Widower Awarded $6 million from Three Airlines that Declared his Wife Too Fat to Fly

Fat Passenger

Vilma and Janos Soltesz left New York for a vacation in Hungary which was going quite well, until the 407 pound 56 year old Vilma fell ill. The obese woman was wheelchair bound, had an amputated leg and suffered from kidney disease. Janos was determined to bring her back to New York immediately to see her regular doctor, but was led on a “Wild goose chase” over Europe to find a plane that would allow her to board.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines had seats similar to those on the plane from New York, but the couple were sent off the plane when Janos struggled with his wife’s wheelchair. In Prague, Delta Airlines did not have a wheelchair strong enough to transport Vilma and did not have access to a skylift. She was assisted trying to board a Lufthansa flight, but attendants said her boarding was taking too long and was holding up other passengers.

Worn out from the ordeal and giving up hope, the couple returned to the vacation home in Hungary where Vilma passed away during the night. Janos Soltesz sued all three airlines for wrongful deal and was awarded $6 million.
