Israel and Jordan, which have had a “cold peace” since 1994, may not fulfill natural gas trade plans. In a memorandum agreed upon by the two countries last Thursday, Israel said it would supply Jordan with 45 cubic meters of natural gas from its Leviathan field. However, the Jordanian population, which contains many Palestinians, may object violently because of the recent war in Gaza.
The memorandum was referred to as a “letter of intention” and not an “agreement.” One plan that may allow the deal to go through without excessive controversy, according to Oded Eran, an energy expert from the Institute of National Security Studies, would be to create a separate entity that would not be expressly identified as Israeli, but will allow Israel to undertake trade. Israel’s partnership with the American company Noble Energy might be a solution to the problem. Eran suggested that when Jordanian officials appeal to the parliament, the king or the PM, they could say that the deal is being carried out with an American company.

But there is one snag with this plan …. aren’t there any Jordanians reading this? Or the news about this elsewhere?
