Out of seven bids from defense companies from various countries, only two have made the final round in a deal that would improve the Philippines’ long-range defense aircraft. Elta Systems and Elbit Systems, both based in Israel, met the eligibility requirements to help enhance the Philippines maritime domain awareness.

Other companies bidding included: Airbus Defense Space of Spain, Saab Asia Pacific of Sweden, PT Digantara of Indonesia, Indonesian Airspace, Lockheed Martin and L3 Mission Integration, both from the United States.

Elta and Elbit reached the eligibility standards because of the success of past projects. In June, Elbit won a $20 million contract to provide armored personnel carriers to the Philippines. However, Elbit and Elta have not yet passed the second round of bidding, which requires the submission of designs for the aircraft that will allow for autonomous operation in remote bases.
