Ending a 3 decade-long relationship with Universal Music Group, CEO Zach Horowitz bade an affectionate farewell to a company he was instrumental in forming.
“After a wonderful 30 years at Universal Music Group, it is time for me to move on and explore other opportunities.”
Although he was CEO for only 2 years, Horowitz spend 12 years as the company’s COO and president, and saw Universal come into existence. After serving as a lawyer for CBS, Horowitz became head of business and legal affairs for MCA Records. Then, when he moved on to the position of COO of MCA, the company’s merger with Polygram records created what is today Universal. Horowitz played a major role and organizing various acquisitions and categories under the Universal heading and started Universal Music Latino after acquiring several Latin labels.
There is talk that the co-president of Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Jody Gerson, might be chosen replace Horowitz as CEO of Universal.
