Those who spent four years without asking, “Where is Marc Ecko, ” are making up for lost time with his series of surreal ads that center around the question “Where was Marc Ecko?” The designer was one of the most celebrated of the 90s and early 00s, and was the youngest to serve on the Board of Directors of the Council of Fashion Designers in America. Since selling Ecko Limited in 2009, Ecko hasn’t appeared much in the media until his recent ad campaign.
One ad in Women’s Wear Daily features a tattoo artist, not Ecko, with a scraggly beard concentrating on a woman’s leg. The text of the ad said that Ecko has spent day and night working on unusual tattoos in Brooklyn, and since the work gave him little time to attend to personal care, he unwittingly invented the hipster beard.

Another ad claims that Ecko was an oceanographer and had a sudden desire to go into outer space. He asked Elon Musk for assistance, and the Tesla CEO told him he would help him get into space if Ecko could snatch Barry Bonds’ baseball from the Hall of Fame.
Perhaps Marc Ecko, whose name was originally Marc Louis Milecofsky, was at home on his parents’ couch in Lakewood, New Jersey? The time hasn’t gone completely wasted, because in 2013, he released his first book “Unlabel: Selling You Without Selling Out, ” with the story of how $5, 000 became a billion dollar brand.
So where was Marc Ecko? Does it really matter, as long as he’s back?
