Researchers are examining the giant holes in an attempt to explain their sudden appearance. According to geologist Konstantin Ranks, natural gas emission may explain the holes’ formation, a consequence of global warming.
The smaller of the two funnels was discovered on July 21, and reported by the Rossiya 1 television channel. The hole has a diameter of approximately 45 feet and snow is visible inside.
News of the original, larger crater came from local reindeer herders, who reported a celestial body that fell to Earth in a flash on September 27, 2013.
One reindeer herder said he only saw smoke, haze, and then a flash.
Currently, many online are speculating about the source of these holes, with some opinions leaning heavily in the direction of alien intervention.
