Even the war between Israel and Hamas did not deter Eisenberg from taking a break from filming Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, in which he plays Lex Luthor alongside Ben Affleck and Israeli actress Gal Gadot, to fly to Tel Aviv’s ZOA House to see the Hebrew version of his play. Eisenberg starred as the lead character David, opposite Vanessa Redgrave at the Cherry Lane Theater in New York to rave reviews.
The play is about a young American Jewish writer with writer’s block who goes to Poland to visit his cousin Maria, a 75 year old Holocaust survivor. Some of Maria’s lines, including those spoken during telephone conversations, were delivered in Polish, and the depiction of the Polish Jewish character were evocative of Eisenberg’s own Polish Jewish roots (he still has relatives living in Poland) and had great resonance for many audience members.
The theater’s manager, Tzipi Pines, applauded Eisenberg for coming to Israel at such a difficult time, and during the Q&A session following the play, Eisenberg said that he had no hesitation coming to Israel for the first time while a war was going on, that he felt safe and had toured many sites in the country during his visit.
Jesse Eisenberg was awarded a Golden Globe and was nominated for an academy award for his portrayal of a character inspired by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in Social Network. Other film credits include Zombieland, Holy Rollers and Adventureland.
