Facebook announced that it hired NBA Development League President Dan Reed to be the head of its new global strategy and partnerships with leagues, teams and athletes.
The announcement comes as Facebook has been expanding its partnership development divisions. It recently hired Sybil Goldman to head its entertainment partnerships. She used to be executive VP of new media at Ryan Seacrest Prods.
Nick Grudin, director of partnerships at Facebook, will be Reed’s new boss. Grudin said that “Facebook is a powerful platform for connecting people with the sports, athletes and events they care about. Dan is a welcome addition to the team building more meaningful connections, conversations and experiences in this area.”
Reed said of his tenure with the NBA, “It’s been a privilege working alongside so many talented people in the NBA family over the past decade. I take great pride in the NBA D-League’s success to date and its incredibly bright future as both a business and a development resource for the NBA and the game of basketball.”
Mark Tatum, the NBA’s Deputy Commissioner, said Reed’s “exceptional business acumen and tireless work ethic have lifted the NBA Development League to new heights. We thank Dan for his contributions to the NBA and look forward to working with him in his new role.”
The NBA achieved significant business growth under Reed’s leadership, setting record attendance and revenues from ticket sales and marketing partnerships, broadening media distribution via new broadcast and digital outlets, reducing key operational costs, and increasing franchise values six-fold.
