The second season of the American Drama Masters of Sex, which stars actress Lizzie Caplan, is about to begin. A trailer for the new season was released just in time for her birthday today. In it the actress narrates a basic recap of the first season with hints of what is to come.
Appearing on the Showtime cable movie channel, Masters of Sex is an original television drama which also stars British actor Michael Sheen from the Oscar winning movie The Queen. It tells the true story of Dr. William Masters and Virginia Johnson who conducted sexual research in America in the 1950s. It is based on Thomas Maier’s biography Masters of Sex: The Life and Times of William Masters and Virginia Johnson, the Couple Who Taught America How to Love.

In it Caplan plays Virginia Johnson, who was not a medical professional and was hired by Masters to work on his study. The two later had an affair and eventually married.
Caplan told The Wrap about her character, “I’m pretty in love with her myself. She does some things I shake my head at, but she’s pretty great.”
“She was fiercely private, ” continued Caplan. “She wanted the work to speak for itself and didn’t want to attract attention to what was going on behind the scenes. One luxury of playing a person that people don’t have a lot of specific knowledge about is that it’s not like playing Marilyn Monroe, where it can be an impersonation. This was completely open to my interpretation.”
The actress was herself in some of the show’s steamier sex scenes. This was not new ground for her as Caplan had already been in similar scenes when she appeared in the first season of HBO’s True Blood.

Caplan recently appeared on the talk show Comedy Bang Bang where she talked about the problems of sexism in Hollywood.
Elizabeth Anne “Lizzy” Caplan, 32, was born in Los Angeles California and raised in a Reform Jewish family. She switched to acting after first trying to play the piano while in high school.
While she had already appeared in many television shows, such as the short lived Freaks and Geaks in 2000, Caplan’s first role in a successful movie came in 2004’s Mean Girls with Tina Fey. In that movie she played Janis Ian, a cynical teenage lesbian.
The second season of Masters of Sex premieres July 13th.
