One of the music world’s most iconic couples, Singers Paul Simon and Edie Brickell are no longer facing charges of disorderly conduct. Connecticut prosecutors have announced that they are dropping their case against the married couple which resulted from a domestic disturbance in their New Canaan home on April 26th. The two were arrested at the time for disorderly conduct.
According to the police who responded to the disturbance at 8 PM that night, in response to a 911 call made by Simon, Brickell accused her husband of shoving her and admitted to slapping him. When they arrived on the scene, Brickell smelled of alcohol and had a bruise on her wrist. Simon suffered a superficial cut to his ear.
Brickell said that the altercation began after she confronted Simon for having done something to “break her heart.” She also said that her husband, “was acting like a spoiled baby by calling 911 and that he did not care about their children.”
At the time CNN reported that her attorney provided them with a statement from the singer in which she said, “I got my feelings hurt and I picked a fight with my husband. The police called it disorderly. Thank God it’s orderly now.”
The day after the incident, the couple left the local courthouse at different times and from different exits. Simon insisted that he and his wife still loved one another saying, “We’re fine, we love each other, we’re fine, we had an argument, it’s over, ” while Brickell said nothing.
The two said in court that they did not consider each other a threat and so no protective order was issued.
The couple was supposed to appear in court yesterday, but did not need to once they were informed that prosecutors would tell the judge that they would no longer be pursuing a case against them. The singers will see the charges formally erased in another thirteen months. The prosecutors, however, reserved the right to reopen the case if the two are charged again for anything in that time.
Edie Brickell is best known for the song What I Am from the Shooting Rubber Bands At The Stars LP, which she released with her band The New Bohemians in 1988. She collaborated last year with comedian and banjo musician Steve Martin on the Roots album Love Has Come For You.
Paul Simon, 72, and Edie Brickell, 48, were married in 1992 and have three children. Simon is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He is touring this year with Rock legend Sting and was the guest of honor at a concert organized by Carnegie Hall in New York on March 31st, in recognition of Simon’s remarkable career achievements.
