It is costly for companies to provide their employees with the latest desk top computers fitted with current operating systems and other software. For this reason, many businesses, both small and large, have turned to thin client PCs. These computers, also known as a lean, zero or slim client, are small in size and have no drives of their own. Instead the user is connected to a central server or an on line cloud.

Chip PC Technologies is an Israeli thin client and desktop virtualization company which markets zero, thin and smart clients and management solutions. Its technology is compatible with cloud and virtualization environments.

The company believes that more firms will turn towards its product in order to not only save money on hardware, but to also save money on the need for maintenance and upgrades of individual PCs. Environmentalists are also pleased with such systems as they feel that discarded old computers are bad for the environment.

Shlomy Nidam, owner of Nidam Communication Ltd and a shareholder of Israel’s Chip PC, told The Times of Israel, “Many of our customers are able to lower the cost of maintaining their computer systems, because all administration can be done from a central location, instead of piecemeal within an organization. And unlike some of the other thin client systems out there, we can also help companies cut their energy use significantly.”

American retail giant Walmart is one of Chip PC’s success stories. According to Nidam, where once the company needed an IT staff of more than 1, 000 spread out over its many stores, it now has just two people doing the same job from one central location.

Creating more unemployment and helping to reduce the field of information technology are not the only criticisms of thin client technology. As long as each company employee can access all of his work on an independent hard drive, then any technical problems that might arise will only affect him. Once every work station is dependent on a connection to a central server or a cloud, then any problems with that connection can shut down a company indefinitely.

The company has established partnerships with Dell, which distributes its products, and Microsoft, incorporating the latest Windows embedded and CE technology in its thin client product lines. Chip PC is also a VMware Technology Alliance Partner (TAP) offering a complete range of VMware Ready products

In addition Chip PC thin clients are integrated in SanDisk’s latest Flash DOCs.

Headquartered in Tirat Carmel, Israel, Chip PC was founded in 2000 by Aviv Soffer and Ora Meir. 20% of the company was acquired by Elbit in 2005. In June 2007 the company held an IPO on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange in which it raised $7 million in stocks, bonds, and warrants.

Chip PC has offices in Germany, Poland, The United Kingdom, Texas and Florida. It recently won 1st place in an independent thin clients evaluation among 26 thin clients from 9 different vendors from around the world.
