Karaoke bars have been popular for years. People love to pretend to be real singers while singing along to the music tracks of their favorite songs. People also love to show off pictures of themselves. This explains the latest fad of people posting everywhere self-taken photographs called selfies.
Now there’s a new app that combines Karaoke with the selfie by letting people make their own music videos.
Under the tag line “when selfie meets music” Israeli startup Fusic, whose name comes from combining the words fuse and music, offers a mobile app which lets users fuse videos of themselves singing together with the song’s official music video. The app can be used by amateurs singing just for fun or professionals for self-promotion.
Currently, the music videos offered by Fusic include those from singers such as Rihanna, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Adele. Older videos from bands like Duran Duran and movie musicals like Hair are also available.
The app was released a few weeks ago and its users have already made several hundred thousand videos, according to Fusic. The company hopes to acquire licensing agreements for the music videos of more top tier musical stars as the app becomes more popular.
Fusic’s CEO, Liat Sade-Sternberg, told The Times of Israel, “It’s definitely a new concept, but one that we’ve seen take off very quickly. It’s the next level in selfies. If, until now, people posted pictures or videos of themselves on Facebook, Whatsapp or other social media, now they can post videos of themselves ‘performing’ the songs they and their friends love.”
The Fusic app is only available for iPhone and iPad and can be downloaded from the iTunes store. But the company expects to offer an Android version soon.
Operation is simple. A user picks a song from a list and then films himself singing it. The song’s lyrics are provided on the screen of the user’s mobile device. When filming is completed, the web site fuses the video clip with the song’s original music video. It takes less than a minute to complete the fusing process.
The company’s owners expect Fusic to top Instagram as the biggest social media app. To that end, it is trying to promote the app through various competitions for the best Fusic video based on a selected song.
As Sade-Sternberg said, “We are sitting on a real game-changer here. I really believe this could be the next Instagram. Who wouldn’t want a selfie music video with their favorite singer?”
Founded in 2011, Fusic is a privately held company headquartered in Tel Aviv.
