Bell Labs, the research and development subsidiary of Alcatel-Lucent, has announced plans to open an Israeli office this summer. The research organization which has branches around the world has invented such breakthrough technologies as the transistor tube, the 32 bit microprocessor and first wireless local area network (WLAN).
Based in Kfar Saba, Alcatel-Lucent’s Israeli subsidiary has been in operation since 1985. It is the research and development division for the company’s carrier cloud solution called CloudBand and employs more than 250 people.
Danny Raz, an Israeli computer scientist professor at the Technion in Haifa who once worked for Bell Labs, will lead its new Israeli office. With a PhD from the Weizmann Institute of Technology in Rehovot, he is an expert in cloud resource management, wireless and cellular networks and other technologies.
Speaking at a tech conference in Tel Aviv recently, Raz said, “This is a unique opportunity for me, as a scientist, to be part of the re-shaping of the telecommunication realm and to have an impact over the lives of many people throughout the globe. I believe that the combination of the Bell Labs’ traditional model and spirit, together with the unique strengths of the Israeli academia and entrepreneurship, is a unique combination, and thus the new Bell Labs Tel Aviv office will have a great impact both for Alcatel-Lucent as well as for the Israeli tech and the global tech community.”
At the same event, Alcatel-Lucent CEO Michel Combes said that the Israel branch, “will produce fantastic results for our customers and for communications globally, and will contribute tremendously to Alcatel-Lucent playing a shaping role in the industry, ”
Alcatel-Lucent VP and CloudBand business unit General manager Dor Skuler said about Israel, “We have a melting pot of talent here. CloudBand is a place where networks, infrastructure, cloud, and information technology collide. It’s not easy to find engineers who are familiar with these things, but they are available in Israel because of the startup and tech ecosystem we have here.”
Bell Labs’ Israeli branch expected to employ up to twenty people and will be located at Alcatel-Lucent’s Kfar Saba offices.
First founded at the end of the 19th Century by Alexander Graham Bell, Bell labs is based in Murray Hill, New Jersey. The company was operated directly by AT&T – Bell’s company – until 1996 when AT&T spun off Bell Laboratories, along with most of its equipment-manufacturing business, into a new company named Lucent Technologies. In 2006, Lucent Merged with Alcatel to form Alcatel-Lucent.
